SOMETIMES WE JUST NEED TO STOP

The Being Yourself Series, from Make Me A Plan's Performance Planner, Gemma Mullinger
22.06.2026.

We find ourselves right in the middle of 2026, Summer Solstice been and gone, and a natural time to reflect on the first half of the year, and plan for what is yet to come. If I look back on the last six months, the most obvious changes are physical and noticeable to everyone – a house move, a completed Masters Degree, a developing career – but the change that’s made most difference to me, personally, behind the scenes, is that I’ve learned to stop and relax!

I recognised a few months ago that I now have the ability to stop and do nothing for a while. To sit with my thoughts and not run from them. To not feel bad for having a void in my day. In fact, rather than berating myself for resting, I can really feel the benefits! I always felt the need to be multi-tasking, productive, and making the most of every opportunity to consume information, learn something new or add to my ever-growing to-do list.

I’m ambitious, and that remains. I’m disciplined, and I like that about myself. I have an inherent love of self-development. But I have surprised myself by becoming more flexible. I know when to stop and value who I already am, without needing to be different or better.

I am growing more intuitive, and listening to the needs of my body and my mind. I let myself lie and listen to the birds first thing in the morning if I want to. I can complete tasks without needing to have a podcast or audiobook in my ears at the same time. Sometimes it feels like the most productive thing to do is to have a cup of coffee outside, and do nothing else, or to walk in nature, appreciating everything I can see, hear and smell.

I have an overwhelming appreciation for calm, quiet and peace. Was my self-worth tied to productivity and how busy I was? Probably! Do I feel any less successful, impactful, or worthy now that I can let myself relax on occasion? Absolutely not! Something for you to ponder over as we head into the second half of the year.

Where could you stop and just let yourself be for a while?
